Could you tell us about yourself and your work?
Dorikalaa was founded in 2021 by Architect JoyshreeMukherji, a graduate of the Kamla
Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies. With a
deep-rooted passion for Indian craftsmanship and a vision to promote indigenous art and
weaving traditions, she created Dorikalaa as a platform that celebrates the timeless
beauty of Indian heritage, reimagined through amodern lens.
At its core, Dorikalaa is driven by the belief that design goes beyond aesthetics — it is
about people, purpose, and practice. We are committed to promoting sustainable living,
and our creations reflect a harmonious balance between traditional techniques and
contemporary design sensibilities. With a strong inclination toward natural materials and
minimalistic aesthetics, the studio has embraced the fusion of bamboo cane, rope, metal,
and wood — creating a unique language of exclusively handwoven furniture and home
décor design that feels both rooted and contemporary. Every weave ismore than just a
craft — it’s a livelihood, amark of dignity, and a living cultural heritage. It is our constant
endeavor to revive and sustain Indian weaving traditions, while giving thema fresh,
modern identity.

How you and your service is helping society?
The people behind the scenes — our artisans, weavers, andmakers — are the heart of
Dorikalaa. Their stories, skills, and spirit are central to how the brand is conceptualized
and built. Its focus on natural materials and handcrafted processes offers an alternative
tomass-produced items, encouraging consumers to value thoughtful creation.
We believe that products are only as good as the practices they support, and that’s why
ethical production, fair treatment, and well-paid, reliable employment for our craftsmen
are non-negotiable pillars of our work. Their work emphasizes artisanal craftsmanship.
By creating contemporary furniture and décor using these age-old skills, the brand helps
preserve cultural heritage while providing artisans with steadywork and fair economic
opportunities. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also highlights
the importance of handmade, durable, and responsible design in modern living spaces.
Dorikalaa acts as a bridge between rural craftsmanship and contemporarymarkets. By
transforming traditional skills into modern, desirable products, the brand gives artisans
broader market exposure and improved income potential. Through thismodel, it
contributes to stronger artisan communities and helps keep traditional crafts relevant and
economically viable in today’s design landscape.

What is the USP of your work?
Dorikalaa offers thoughtfully designed, sustainable, handwoven furniture and home décor
products that combines the elegance of natural materialswith architectural strength,
driven by a designer-led vision. This creates a blend of artisanal texture and organic
design.
Our design philosophy is – “ desing should not only be visually appealing but also meaningful and sustainable.”
Because the products are handwoven and designer-led, we offer a high degree of
customization or at leastmore artistic/unique designs than mass-produced furniture.
By using naturalmaterials like rattan and bamboo cane emphasizing sustainability, we
tap into the growing market of eco-conscious consumers.
Themetallic and cane woven with rope and wicker fusion suggests that our indoor and
outdoor furniture along with our handwoven gifting collection isn’t just pretty — it’s built to
last, striking a balance between delicate weave work and strong structural elements.

What are your Vision and Mission?
Vision :
As a designer, I envision Dorikalaa as a space where craftsmanship, sustainability, and
thoughtful design come together. I want every piece we create to carry the warmth of
human hands, the elegance of naturalmaterials, and the quiet confidence of good design.
My vision is to revive the art of weaving and bring it into contemporary living — creating
furniture that is not just functional, but soulful, meaningful, and timeless
Mission :

To preserve and celebrate the beauty of handwoven techniques and products and
integrating theminto modern, thoughtfully designed furniture.

Every Dorikalaa piece should feel intentional where proportions, materials, texture
and usability come together in harmony.

We want our work to reflect a respect for nature, using materials and processes
that are responsible, long lasting and meaningful.

To support artisan communities and preserve craftsmanship through meaningful,
design-led products.

Every product of Dorikalaa must feel personal – something that sparks joy, comfort,
and a connection to the story behind the hands that created it, thoughtfully
conceived in terms of form, function and spatial harmony.

What are your achievements in this industry?
My biggest achievement has always been the learning andmentorship I’ve received from
the eminent architects and designers I had the privilege to work with before starting my
own practice. Their influence shaped my design thinking, my understanding of materials,
and my commitment to craftsmanship. The experiences I gathered under their guidance
continue to guide every decision I make at Dorikalaa. I have successfully completed many
interior projects including residential, commercial , restaurants before opening the current
and budding segment focusing on furniture and gifting products.
As I embarked on my independent journey, Dorikalaa began to find its own voice — and I
amgrateful that our work has been recognised by the design community. Our handwoven
indoor and outdoor furniture and I have been featured in eminent design and lifestyle
magazines, including:
 Interior Exterior
 Society Interiors
 Decorama
 Desing Connect
We are truly thankful to all these publishers for showcasing our craft and bringing our
work to readers across India. Their appreciation motivates us to keep creating
meaningful, handwoven designs that celebrate the beauty of craftsmanship and
sustainable design.

Does your work ever feel tedious to you? If so, how do you stay driven and
motivated towards it?

Like any creative journey, there are moments when the work becomes repetitive or
demanding — especially when we are perfecting handwoven details, experimenting with
materials, or refining structural designs. Yes, some days do feel tedious. But that feeling
never lasts long, because my motivation comes from something deeper.
What keeps me driven is the pure joy of creation and the constant learning I carry from
the eminent architects and designers I worked with earlier in my career. Their influence
taught me that even the most repetitive tasks are part of a larger pursuit — the pursuit of
craft, quality, and meaningful design.
I stay motivated by reminding myself that every weave, every prototype, every sketch
contributes to something bigger. It contributes to a piece that someone will live with,
cherish, and emotionally connect to. That sense of purpose keepsme going.

What are your hobbies and specific interests other than your profession?
Outside my professional work, I am deeply drawn to anything that nurtures creativity and
brings calmness to the mind. Music is one of my greatest companions — old classics,
present melodies centers me, helps me rewind and rejuvenate myself, and creates the
quiet space I need to think, imagine and stay focused. Whether I’m working or unwinding,
music plays a big role in keeping my mind balanced and happy.
I’m also passionate about art in all its forms. Exploring different mediums, fabulous work
of other architects and interior designers or simply observing details in everyday life fuels
my creativity and broadens my design perspective.
Along with these, spirituality plays an important role in my life. It grounds me, offers
perspective, and helps my personal growth with calmness and gratitude. Spiritual
practices allow me to reconnect with myself and approach my work with renewed clarity
and intention.
These interests aren’t separate from my profession; they complement it, keeping my
thoughts fresh, my senses open, and my creative energy alive.

You have achieved so much in life, any specific advice you’d like to share with
our readers to grow in life.

Thank you for the kind words, but I truly believe that whatever I have been able to deliver
till date and bring smiles to my esteemed clients is the result of continuous learning and
the guidance I’ve received from the people I’ve worked with and otherwise too. My journey
has taught me that growth is not a destination — it’s a gentle, ongoing process.
If I were to share any advice, it would be this:
Stay curious, stay humble, and never stop learning. Every person you meet and every
experience you go through has something to teach you. Be open to it.
Also, don’t be afraid of starting small or taking slow steps. Consistency and sincerity
matter far more than speed.
And above all, stay true to your values. When your work comes from a place of honesty,
passion, and compassion, growth naturally follows. I’m learning every day, and I hope to
keep evolving — both as a designer and as a person. If you can hold on to gratitude and
keep moving forward with sincerity, life has a beautiful way of opening the right doors at
the right time.
Thank You
