Interviewed by The Success Today – A Digital Webzine
Could you tell us about yourself and your work?
I am Usha R. Poornima. I am from Tamil Nadu. I am a Biomedical Engineer. I was working with Larsen and Toubro in Chennai. I had to quit my job at a point in my life. It was one of the most challenging decisions of my life. Then I moved to Kerala and felt like there were no opportunities around. But it was in 2020 that I started seeing a ray of hope when I joined Toastmasters International. Many opportunities came my way, and I grabbed them without a second thought. Then I realised I should make myself qualified for all that I am doing, and I started my learning journey. Now I am a phonics trainer, a certified soft skills trainer, a certified corporate trainer and life coach, an NLP practitioner, an image consultant, a POSH trainer, Motivational Speaker, Story teller and will be adding on more to the list.
I am having a full-time job now along with that when I get time I conduct training programmes both online and offline.
How you and your service is helping society?
I’ve always wished that someone would look at me and say, “I didn’t give up because of you.”
Touchwood, many people have contacted me personally in the last few years, informing me that I am their inspiration and that seeing me has inspired them to restart their careers. I’ve also provided them the best guidance I could. And through my trainings I always try to create value, educate and empower people.
What is the USP of your work?
I feel that each person is unique, and despite the fact that there are millions of trainers all over the world, I just strive to be myself and do my best in all I do.
My trainings are personalised. I provide training to students, instructors, professionals, and businesses. I am fluent in three languages: Tamil, Malayalam, and English. I wish I could learn a couple more languages.
What are your Vision and Mission?
My goal is to conduct more trainings all over the world, to empower and inspire others, and to help individuals realise their full potential and to be a small part of their success.
What are your achievements in this industry?
As I mentioned earlier I have very recently started my training career, but because people believe in my abilities, I have had numerous opportunities, which I was able to give my best and that has given me a terrific start in my training and coaching career.
NIST awarded me as the best public speaker and soft skills trainer- Global achievers award 2022. I also won the Women of the Future- All India women achievers award 2023.
Does your work ever feel tedious to you? If so, how do you stay driven and motivated toward it?
As I work full-time, I can only conduct this training and coaching, which is my love, after work or on weekends. Yes, as a mom of two, it does get tedious at times, but when you have a passion, it gives you the energy to keep going, and that is how I keep going. Just remembering why I began provides me with energy and motivation.
When I’m feeling low, I just look back and see the path I’ve taken and how far I’ve come, and I remind myself that I still have a long way to go.
What are your hobbies and specific interests other than your profession?
Listening to music, reading books and at times having some ME time.
You have achieved so much in life, any specific advice you’d like to share with our readers to grow in life?
Yes, if you genuinely believe in your potential, even when the whole world is against you, never ever listen to them. Success doesn’t come overnight; it takes lots of effort, and it’s also not a destination; it’s a journey. Try to be the best versions of yourselves.
Last but not least, I say, “If you can’t fly, then run; if you can’t run, then walk; if you can’t walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to.
