A Hindustan Unilever’s cosmetic brand, Lakmé was found in the year 1952 by JRD Tata. It was named after the French opera, Lakme, which is the French form of the Indian goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. Lakmé is the number one cosmetic label in India. It was introduced to encourage women back then to use more of Indian made cosmetics when the amount of foreign exchange on beauty products, increased. Simone Tata was the company director then and later took the position of chairperson of Lakmé.
In the Brand trust report of 2012, Lakmé stood at 104th position in the trusted brand’s list. Later, the next year it managed to be the 71st most trusted brand and on 36th position in the year 2014.
Along with manufacturing cosmetic products and body care commodities, Lakmé also has its own salons and training centers in various parts of India providing skilled beauticians in varied specialties. Pushkaraj Shenai is the current CEO of Lakmé salons. Tata had sold off the stakes in Lakmé to Hindustan Unilever Limited in the year 1996 for around 45 million US dollars.
It has advertised with many topmost actresses, where currently Kareena Kapoor Khan and Ananya Pandey are its brand ambassadors. Miss World, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has also worked with Lakmé. Lakmé is also the lead sponsor of Lakmé Fashion Week which is held every year in Mumbai and is currently the largest fashion event of its kind in India.
Lakmé’s tagline, ‘On Top of the World’ keeps impressing women of all age groups with every new product and encourages them to be bound with more of Indian based Products.
