Antecedently known as Blue Ribbon Sports (RBS), was founded in 1964 by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman to design and merchandise shoes for runners.

Nike’s singular focus innovation is the fuel that powers their performance. It continues to push through the boundaries creating growth opportunities that set Nike apart. Nike sees the world with endless possibilities for human potential and continues to inspire new generations.

Here’s a glance at Nike’s Timeline:

1964 – Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman found RBS.

1971 – Blue Ribbon Sports becomes Nike. Also, Bowerman comes up with an iconic sole pattern for Waffle Trainers.

1972 – Ilie Nastase becomes the first person to sign an endorsement with Nike.

1979 – introduction of  “Air” technology with new Tailwind Shoe.

1980- completed IPO with a value of eighteen cents a share.

1984 -Signed Michael Jordan, launching Air Jordan series.

1987 – Nike’s ad for new Air Max shoes becomes the first ad to use a band’s music.

1988 – First “Just Do It” campaign launched.

1990 – First Niketown store opens in Portland, Oregon.

1996 –  signed Tiger Woods.

1999 – co-founder Bowerman died.

2004 –  acquired Converse for $309 million. Knight steps down as CEO and president of Nike, however, retains chairman role as William D. Perez becomes the company’s new CEO.

2012 – became an official provider for NFL attire.

2015 – became an official provider for NBA attire.

Nike’s success has been the result of the constant innovation and timely investments that have resulted in profits worth million bucks each year. It truly changed the face of sports.
